Pro Silva Ireland is delighted to announce the launch of a new one-day training course on initiating continuous cover forestry (CCF) in Irish oak plantations.
This one-day workshop will provide a comprehensive introduction to oak management, combining theoretical knowledge with practical field experience. The course is open to forest owners, foresters and forest workers who have previously attended an ‘Introduction to Continuous Cover Forestry’ event run by Pro Silva Ireland.
This course is designed to equip participants with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to begin the transformation of oak plantations to CCF and a basic level of knowledge of CCF will be assumed. The course will delve into the biology and silviculture of Irish oak, explore the principles and techniques of CCF transformation, and provide hands-on experience with crown thinning in an oak plantation requiring this intervention.
Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to initiate the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient forest management system.
Topics covered include
Basic tree biology
Timber quality assessment
Impact of grey squirrel damage
Epicormic shoot development
Crown formation and branching
Formative and high pruning
Tree marking for crown thinning
