Pro Silva Ireland Study Tour to Scotland 2024

Shaping our future with resilient forests

In late September 2024, 36 members of Pro Silva Ireland embarked on their annual Study Tour, traveling to Aviemore, Scotland, for a four-day excursion.

The trip, expertly organised by Edward (Ted) Wilson, featured an impressive programme that included visits to some of Scotland’s oldest managed forests, sites demonstrating pinewood silviculture using continuous cover forestry (CCF) principles, a large-scale rewilding project in the Cairngorms, a small-scale sawmill business, a fascinating afternoon in Darnaway forest near Forres managed under CCF with a diverse range of species, finishing up with a visit to an Anderson CCF research plot near Pitlochry.

Pro Silva Ireland and all the participants would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to our gracious hosts in the Scottish Highlands, whose warm welcome and generosity in sharing their expertise made the experience truly memorable.

A special thanks goes to Ted Wilson for curating an outstanding itinerary, driving the minibus, acting as our knowledgeable guide, and ensuring the voice amplifier was put to good use throughout the trip.

We would also like to express our gratitude to Olive Leavy for managing the logistics and making sure everything ran smoothly.

Finally, thanks to Robbie Windle and Conor Dowling for writing an in-depth and informative report on the trip.
