Other CCF operations

CCF works with natural processes, supported by practical interventions that guide forest development over time.

While reliance on natural processes is central to CCF management, targeted interventions are sometimes needed to help achieve management objectives. Enrichment planting and light forest operations can be used to improve species diversity, guide stand development and enhance the future value and resilience of the forest.

Enrichment planting

Natural regeneration is the preferred means of renewing a forest under CCF. However, the species that establish naturally are limited by the seed sources already present within or near the site. Enrichment planting (or underplanting) can help where:

Species diversity is low

Desirable timber species are absent

Biodiversity objectives are not being met

Greater resilience is required

Ground vegetation is limiting natural regeneration

Light forest operations

Silvicultural interventions used to improve quality and direct natural processes.

Early identification of quality trees within natural regeneration

Release of quality trees through respacing or halo thinning

Management of species composition and diversity

Quality improvement, including shaping and pruning
