CCF transformation in farm forests

The Pro Silva Ireland Autumn Field Day will focus on the early transformation of a farm forest to continuous cover forestry (CCF). The day will entail a guided walk through a farm forest, with discussions focusing on:

  • The importance of owner engagement and building a forest culture in Ireland
  • DAFM supports through the Woodland Improvement Scheme
  • Biodiversity monitoring
  • Harvesting
  • Enrichment planting

About the site

Kinwood is a 19-hectare farm forest owned by Dermot Leavy and managed by his daughter Olive. Planted in 2001, the forest has undergone two thinnings and is composed mainly of Norway spruce and sycamore. Diseased ash plots were replanted with a native woodland mix in 2024.

The forest is undergoing transformation to CCF to enhance its structural and species diversity, resilience and to create a lasting legacy for future generations.

Contributors

Contributions on the day will come from foresters Manus Crowley and Sean Hoskins, forestry contractor Liam Byrne, woodland ecologist Janice Fuller and owner Olive Leavy, all active members of the Pro Silva community.

The Pro Silva Ireland AGM will be held during lunchtime. Further AGM-related details will be circulated to members in advance.
