Spring Field Day 2024

Our Spring Field Day, on Saturday 27th April 2024, is a joint event with the Royal Forestry Society where we will visit the Winner of the RDS 2022 Production Forestry Award, Seaforde Estate, Co. Down.

Date

27/04/2024

Time

10:00 am

Location

BT30 8PQ

Seaforde Estate, is located 10km northeast of Castlewellan, Co. Down, at the foot of the Mourne Mountains.

Seaforde has been home of the Forde family for almost 400 years. Throughout the centuries, Seaforde’s buildings, parkland, farmland, woods and gardens have evolved and adapted in shape, size and purpose as each successive generation leaves its mark. With some original features standing the test of time, and others being lost to history, there is no better example of this betrothal of old and new than the woodlands.

Managed by Scottish Woodlands Ltd, the objectives of the woods include:

  • Manage the woodlands under the principles of Low Impact Silvicultural Systems (LISS) as a means of enhancing the species/age/size classes of trees and thereby maintaining and enhancing the resilience and character of the Long-Established Woodlands and the wider historic estate.
  • Increase woodland resilience through enrichment replanting and new woodland creation consisting of a diverse range of conifer and broadleaf species adapted to Close to Nature Silvicultural Systems.
  • Maintain and enhance the broad range of biologically diverse habitats on the estate, such as species rich lowland meadow, woodland and wetland.
  • Contribute to the development of the local rural economy.
  • Facilitate greater public access to woodland areas.
  • Carbon sequestration.

We will learn how both public and private grant funding can provide positive benefits for woodland (and agricultural) habitats.

There will but a range of speakers on the day that all contribute to the success of the management regime and will provide the basis of a fascinating discussion.

All are welcome to attend our field day. Please click on the button to register in advance. Registration will also be open from 10:30am on the day.
