ForestMoocForChange: new online training course on continuous cover forestry

September 27, 2023

ForestMoocForChange

A free massive online learning course (MOOC), providing an introduction to continuous cover forestry, covering the various aspects of this forestry approach over an 8-week period, beginning 16th October 2023.

The Project

The ForestMoocForChange is a new collaborative project, co-financed by the European Union, between four European forestry development agencies involved in close-to-nature forestry development: Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Naturgemäße Waldwirtschaft (ANW) in Germany, Pro Silva France, Teagasc Forestry Development Department in Ireland and Forêt-Nature in Belgium as lead partner.

The aim of the project is to help overcome initial challenges and provide new tools to facilitate the transformation of Europe’s forests towards continuous cover systems as a way to optimise production of quality wood, biodiversity, the protection of ecosystem services and enhanced resilience.

The Course

The course includes numerous videos produced in the field by experts, managers and owners. Each week, a live meeting will be organised with the speakers enabling participants to ask questions and discuss the subject covered. From discovering how continuous cover works and its dynamics, to questions of an economic, ecological or social nature, the MOOC is designed to be comprehensive and aimed at everyone.

Rodney was one of the original founding members of Pro Silva, a signatory of the declaration of Robanov Kot (1989), the Pro Silva founding document. It is his championing of Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), a term he was instrumental in defining and promoting, that will stand perhaps as his greatest legacy. He was the first chairman of the Continuous Cover Forestry Group (CCFG) and was responsible for establishing a formal association with ProSilva.
The focus of the Pro Silva Ireland Autumn field day will be early management of 1st generation oak plantation. We will be joined on the day by the Head Cooper from Irish Distillers in Middleton Co. Cork. Ger is a 5th generation cooper who has spent his life working with oak and knows the quality requirements of oak for coopering better than anyone. In recent years, Irish Distillers have been working with Pro Silva Ireland members to sustainably source high quality oak for coopering.
Phil Morgan, President of ProSilva Europe and known to many ProSilva Ireland members recently wrote an article on "The Case for Continuous Cover Forestry". The Forestry & Timber News Journal has kindly allowed us to re-publish the article here.
