Details for the April ProSilva Ireland Open Forest Day are as follows:

Date: April 28, from 11am-4pm – all welcome.

Venue:  David and Mary Legge’s property, near Keshcarrigan, Co. Leitrim

Meeting:  Meeting time and location will be circulated closer to the event time. Please bring your own packed lunch and wet weather clothing and boots.

A €20 donation is appreciated to cover the cost of the visiting European ProSilva foresters.

What will be covered on the day:

David, Mary and family have a range of forestry plantations all of which are being transformed to Close-to-nature continuous cover forestry.  In the morning we will be visiting a high Yield Class stand of Sitka spruce planted in 1990 which to date has received 2 transformation thinnings using the Graduated Density System defined by Talis Kalnars.  We will be discussing the next steps as the 3rd thinning is imminent.  We will also visit a small mixed hardwood stand and another poor quality mixture of Ash and Noble fir.

In the afternoon we will visit more broadleaved stands, including a very interesting 4 acre stand of alder and established solely by natural regeneration and a stand of birch established in 2002.  We will be discussing the need for early intervention in these stands.

We will be joined on the day by Marc Etienne from ProSilva France and by another ProSilva expert from Europe, to be confirmed.

This will be a fantastic insight into the management of the transformation of recently established plantation forestry into permanent forests.

Rodney was one of the original founding members of Pro Silva, a signatory of the declaration of Robanov Kot (1989), the Pro Silva founding document. It is his championing of Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), a term he was instrumental in defining and promoting, that will stand perhaps as his greatest legacy. He was the first chairman of the Continuous Cover Forestry Group (CCFG) and was responsible for establishing a formal association with ProSilva.
The focus of the Pro Silva Ireland Autumn field day will be early management of 1st generation oak plantation. We will be joined on the day by the Head Cooper from Irish Distillers in Middleton Co. Cork. Ger is a 5th generation cooper who has spent his life working with oak and knows the quality requirements of oak for coopering better than anyone. In recent years, Irish Distillers have been working with Pro Silva Ireland members to sustainably source high quality oak for coopering.
