SelectFor training courses in CCF management

SelectFor Ltd is offering two different training courses in continuous cover forest (CCF) management to Pro Silva Ireland members over the coming months.

 

1 day CCF Course for Forest Operations

This 1-day course is designed to suit all levels of expertise and understanding of CCF and is especially suited for forest owners and forestry operators. It will will be held at Carrignamuck and Cloragh Estate, Co. Wicklow.

This course will take place on Tuesday 30th April 2024 and again on Tuesday 17th September 2024.

Irregular Silviculture in Ireland & Britain: Transformation in Practice

This course will be held over 3 days; 2 days in England and 1 day in Ireland.

The dates for the England part of the course are 30th April and 1st May 2024 and will take place near Mere, Wiltshire.

The Ireland leg will be held on 18th September 2024 in Cloragh and Knockrath Estates, Co. Wicklow

Fees for both courses are being funded by the EIB R&D and Training Support Project to a Continuous Cover Forestry Fund. Participants will be required to fund their own travel, accommodation and subsidence.

In memory of Pro Silva founding member Rodney Helliwell (1940-2018)

Rodney was one of the original founding members of Pro Silva, a signatory of the declaration of Robanov Kot (1989), the Pro Silva founding document. It is his championing of Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), a term he was instrumental in defining and promoting, that will stand perhaps as his greatest legacy. He was the first chairman of the Continuous Cover Forestry Group (CCFG) and was responsible for establishing a formal association with ProSilva.

Pro Silva Ireland Autumn Field Day, Moyrath, Kildalkey, Co. Meath and AGM

The focus of the Pro Silva Ireland Autumn field day will be early management of 1st generation oak plantation. We will be joined on the day by the Head Cooper from Irish Distillers in Middleton Co. Cork. Ger is a 5th generation cooper who has spent his life working with oak and knows the quality requirements of oak for coopering better than anyone. In recent years, Irish Distillers have been working with Pro Silva Ireland members to sustainably source high quality oak for coopering.

The Case for Continuous Cover Forestry

Phil Morgan, President of ProSilva Europe and known to many ProSilva Ireland members recently wrote an article on "The Case for Continuous Cover Forestry". The Forestry & Timber News Journal has kindly allowed us to re-publish the article here.
